On 26 May 2026, the Council of the European Union adopted a revised Directive aimed at strengthening the electoral rights of EU citizens residing in another Member State in municipal elections.
The reform updates and modernises the existing 1994 legislation governing the right of mobile EU citizens to vote and stand as candidates in local elections. It forms part of the broader European Democracy Package and complements the recently adopted reform concerning European Parliament elections.

Vienna, 25 March 2024: Crucial voter registration deadlines for the 6-9 June 2024 European Parliament elections in three EU Member States (ES, IT, FI) passed already.
Tomorrow, on 26 March, Austria will have its cut off date for the voter register. Especially if you are a mobile EU citizen living in Austria and you would like to vote in Austria you would need to register by tomorrow. More information via the Ministry of Interior website.

Brussels, Vienna, 6 March 2024: The number of EU mobile citizens (EU citizens living in another Member State) is estimated at 13.7 million. Some 11 million are considered to be of voting age.
